Pressure washing and soft washing both clean the outside of your home, but they work in very different ways. Using the wrong one can leave mildew behind or, worse, damage your home. Here's the difference and when to use each.
What Is Pressure Washing?
Pressure washing uses high-pressure water, usually around 3,000 PSI or more, to blast dirt, grime, gum and mildew off hard surfaces. It's the right choice for:
- Concrete driveways and sidewalks
- Pavers and pool decks
- Patios and walkways
- Curbs and dumpster pads
Even on concrete, pros pair pressure with a cleaning solution. The pressure removes the dirt, and the solution kills the mildew and algae so it doesn't come back right away.
What Is Soft Washing?
Soft washing uses low pressure, about the same as a garden hose, combined with a cleaning solution that kills mold, mildew, algae and bacteria at the root. The solution does the cleaning, not the pressure. It's the right choice for:
- Stucco and painted surfaces
- Vinyl and wood siding
- Roofs and shingles
- Pool screens and enclosures
- Gutters, fascia and soffits
Why Not Just Pressure Wash Everything?
High pressure on the wrong surface can cause real damage:
- Stucco: can chip, crack, or force water behind the wall
- Paint: can peel or strip off
- Siding: can crack or force water up under the panels
- Roof shingles: can lose their protective granules, shortening the roof's life
- Screens: can tear or pop out of the frame
High pressure also doesn't kill the organisms causing the stains. It just knocks off what you can see. Soft washing kills the growth, so the surface stays clean longer.
Pressure Washing vs. Soft Washing at a Glance
- Pressure: High (3,000+ PSI) vs. low (similar to a garden hose)
- What does the cleaning: Mostly water force vs. mostly cleaning solution
- Best for: Concrete, pavers, hard surfaces vs. stucco, siding, roofs, screens
- How long it stays clean: Shorter without chemicals vs. longer because growth is killed at the root
Why Soft Washing Matters in Florida
Central Florida's heat and humidity are perfect for mold, mildew and algae. Most homes here are stucco, which is porous and holds onto growth. Soft washing gets into those pores and cleans them safely. Those black streaks on Florida roofs are algae, and soft washing is the method recommended to remove them without damaging shingles.
Is Soft Washing Safe for My Plants?
Yes, when it's done right. We soak your plants with fresh water before we start, keep our mix at a plant-safe strength, and rinse everything again when we're done.
Which One Does My Home Need?
Most homes need both: soft washing for the house, roof and screens, and pressure washing for the driveway, sidewalks and pool deck. Waddle Works offers house soft washing, roof washing and pressure washing across Orlando, Oviedo, Sanford, Winter Springs and Central Florida, and you save 10% when you bundle 2 or more services.
